I am a father, husband, amputee, outdoorsman. coach and adventurer. I have spent my entire life chasing adventure and pursuing happiness. I lost my leg in 2009 in a motorcycle accident that resulted in a broken femur, back, sacrum and a busted bladder. As an adaptive ambassador, my primary focus is to share my journey in hopes to inspire those experiencing adversity.  I hope to help others over come and succeed in the outdoors and workplace.

My adaptive philosophy starts with independence. Independence to me was regaining the freedoms my able-bodied counterpart once took for granted.  When you are faced with adversity everything becomes a challenge, every day tasks become the mountain and the end of the day becomes the summit. Setting achievable goals is the first step to regaining your independence.

When I lost my leg I lived in a two story house with no inside access to the bottom floor. This meant when my wife left for work each day I needed to be where I was going to be until she got home, which I hated. I started setting small daily goals. The first three months after becoming an amputee were the hardest.  I was non-weight bearing on my amputation side due to a hip and sacrum fracture. It was incredibly difficult to stand for more than a few minutes at a time.

I am a massive breakfast eater so naturally my first goals were to simply stand long enough to make breakfast. The first few weeks I poured a bowl of cereal and tried to take it to the table without spilling it. As simple as that sounds, I probably spilled 5 bowls of cereal on the floor before I figured it out. Then came real challenges like making pancakes (my favorite).  That lead to frying bacon, which lead to my wife coming home to find I had made fried eggs, pancakes, omelets, bacon, sausage, scrabbled eggs and biscuits.  I used small, achievable goals to lead me to a much larger goal. Too bad my goal wasn't to do the dishes!

My point is as simple as it is obvious; start by setting small achievable goals. Allow those small goals to help you achieve your dream. I hope to share my journey with you using social media and public speaking. To book a speaking engagement, please use the Contact link above.
